Harka Self-Sustaining Orphanage Home was started in Bharatpur in Chitwan district, 170 kilometres southwest of the capital, Kathmandu, in September 2004. It has been officially registered with the District Administration Office, Chitwan and the registration number is 18/061/62. Its affiliation number with the Social Welfare Council is 17038.

The main feature of the home is to run it through local initiatives without any outside funding. The Royal Nepal Friendship Club (RNFC) – the initiator of the project – has been supporting the establishment of the home, which now shelters 20 orphan children (….. boys and …. girls), and the club itself bears the general costs to run it. There is the capacity of accommodating 50 children. Initially, the home was started with only three children. At the moment, only orphan children have been taken in.

The Harka Self-Sustaining Orphanage Home, i.e., the orphanage has seven-member steering committee, which handles the running of it. Establishment of similar home in Pokhara, the tourist hub of Nepal, is in the pipeline.
