There is no dearth of welfare homes for destitute children in Nepal. That is only if it is to go by statistical number alone. According to an estimate, there are some 400 such homes in Nepal, of which only about 160 are registered officially. Of Nepal’s 9.8 million children below 16 years of age, about 30 per cent of them are living in extremely difficult condition. Of them, over 70 percent live in villages. In contrary, over 90 per cent of such homes are centralised in the national capital and other major city hubs. Yet, one can see large number of children spending chilly nights under the open sky in the cities. Many others can be seen begging in the streets. And, they prefer to do so. Many little innocent faces make up significant majority in ordinary hotels and restaurants, let alone those struggling to earn two meals a day in the hinterlands of Nepal’s villages.

Why is so? Why are our little kids toiling so much and so miserably just to sustain their life? A list of such questions may go unending. And, we too don’t have all-in-one answers. But what we believe is whatever things there already are for children, they haven’t been designed in such a way that they last long. Many initiatives meant for children have gone haywire.

Being the citizens of Nepal and witnessing the pitiable situation of our budding stars, we have thought of a design, which may help improve the poor plight of our children. It may not be an answer to all questions or problems facing our children, it certainly helps ensure their future, albeit a few of them at the moment. The motto we have is to: make the good initiatives designed for the welfare of our children self-sustaining in the long run.

Nandumaya Self-Sustaining Orphanage Home is our model project and we have thought of expanding such homes in other parts of the country like Chitwan,Pokhara and Nepalgung.
